Statement about this object This cloth was made to be attached to the top of a baby's hat to provide protection and decoration. Anne Fadiman writes in "The Spirit Catches You When You Fall Down" that, "Hmong babies are often dressed in intricately embroidered hats...which, when see from a heavenly perspective, might fool a predatory dab [malevolent spirit] into thinking the child was a flower."
