Claire Emery is an artist living and working in Missoula, Montana. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Houston, Texas. Emery moved to Montana in 1992 and began her career as an artist in the mountains with a field journal. She turned her love for sketching and observation of the natural landscape into a freelance business where she illustrates books, posters, interpretive signs and publications. Emery's artistic efforts focus transforming her field sketches into hand-carved woodblock prints. Emery has exhibited at the Oakland Museum of California, Oakland, California; Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson, Arizona; and the New York State Museum, Albany, New York. She has been the recipient of grants awarded from the Montana Arts Council. According to her website, "Rather than seeing art and activism as two exclusive spheres of practice, Emery sees art as a springboard to understanding and action in community. She engages diverse strategies- collaboration, research, teaching, field work, field sketching, scientific illustration, installation, woodcuts, printmaking and mindfulness - in a practice that aims to engage the human imagination and community in personal and environmental change."
