Biographical information compiled by the Gale Group and used with permission of the artist. Statement, October 2007: "Like most artists and illustrators, I enjoyed drawing and painting very early in life. I originally planned to be a veterinarian, but when I received a full scholarship to Maryland Institute of Art, it seemed a perfect fit. After receiving a BFA in 1970, I exhibited my work in galleries and museums in the West for nearly 20 years. "During that time, I produced my best work: two sons, Matthew and John. Matthew has since added two little girls to the clan - Sophie Grace and Helena Marion. "My parents encouraged their children to be curious about natural things and to really pay attention when outdoors. I especially enjoy bird watching, not as an end in itself, but as a vehicle to experience whatever else nature has to offer at a given time, in a given place. "In 1990, I discovered what I should have been doing all along... illustrating books for children. It's been my good fortune to work with a Very fine editor, Victoria Rock, as well as talented book designers and authors. As a team, we've created 18 books over the past 18 years. Life is good." |
