Sheila Miles lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico and chairs the School of Visual Arts at the Desert Academy. Prior to this, she spent about three decades in Montana. She described her process in 2003, on the occassion of a solo exhibition at the Missoula Art Museum: "I try to let a painting lead me where it wants to go. And because I'm easily bored I rely heavily on a sense of play. I'm a process painter who is inspired by the abstract qualities of the material -- the thickness of the paint, the colors, a line, a gesture and so on -- which in turn determine the direction of the painting. The moods -- psychological and emotional -- created by these marks prompt the subject matter. When I paint I'm looking for the soul of the painting and the soul in me." A prolific artist, Miles has presented solo exhibitions at Kind of a Small Array, Magdalena, New Mexico; Oracle Residency Gallery, Oracle, Arizona; Holter Museum, Helena, Montana; Paris Gibson Square Art Museum, Great Falls, Montana; and Dahl Art Museum, Rapid City, South Dakota. Her paintings and drawings are housed in numerous private and public collections, including the Federal Reserve Bank Minneapolis, Minnesota; Missoula Art Museum; Yellowstone Art Museum, Billings, Montana; Deaconess Hospital, Montana, Museum of Art and Culture, University of Montana, Missoula; and the Missoula International Airport.
