Statement about this object |
This cloth was made in Missoula and was intended to embellish a coin purse that would accompany a traditional costume. The central motifs are snail and center post. Snails indicate that the work is made the Sam Neua tradition or by a maker from that region. Traditionally, the snail pattern symbolizes family, with conjoined snails, as seen here, suggesting fecundity or fertility. Inside the center post patterns are seed stitches and the red border is embroidered with a fence pattern. |
