Statement about this object |
This cloth was made in Missoula to be applied to a coin purse that would accompany a costume item. A thin sheet of plastic is stitched over the central reverse applique "snail" pattern to protect the cloth until it is ready to be used. The spiraling snail design indicates that the work was made by someone from the Sam Neua region of Laos. Traditionally, the snail pattern symbolizes family, with conjoined snails, as seen here, suggesting fecundity or fertility. |
