Statement about this object |
"'Forced North' depicts the forced removal of Chief Charlo's band of the Salish Tribe from the Bitterroot Valley to the Jocko Valley in 1891. This map represents the physical landscape of the Missoula Valley with the emotional historical event as an overlay. Included are major rivers and topographic lines; political boundaries and manmade structures are excluded. I wanted this map to depict only the event and the landscape, searing the event onto the landscape regardless of changes in population and appearance over time. The map serves as a cultural memory of the event and a reminder that Charlo's band deliberately rose through town on horseback to emphasize their presence rather than skirting town and quietly disappearing." - Artist's concept statement c. 2008 |
