Statement about this object |
Nia Lee identified the cross-stitch pattern as the "Cow House design," and the border stitching, similar to fence motifs, as "ruam ris." This cloth was made in Thailand and collected from Lee in Lincoln, MT in 1986. It is unknown if Lee made the work prior to arriving in the United States or if she was selling it on behalf of a relative still in a refugee camp. Embroiderers in the camps exported their textiles to generate income. Because authorship was not a strict value for the Hmong, the person selling the cloth was commonly named as the maker, as well. |
