Statement about this object |
"The Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes are being pressured by the state of Montana to construct a freeway through the middle of our reservation homelands. Many of our tribal members and other residents of our reservation are in strong opposition to this proposed freeway development. "The cast tire forms were duplicated from original fragments found along Highway 93 on the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Indian reservation in northwestern Montana. The tire represents the ominous changes that are occurring on many of our reservations. The torn photographs of our reservation lands represent the fragmentation created when roads cut through sensitive cultural sites and disrupt or destroy plant and animal habitat. The bison or buffalo represents our connection with our culture. The split in the buffalo image and shield is caused from the great weight of the asphalt as it invades our lands. The red beads represent our Mother's blood and that of our animal brothers and sisters who pay a high price when the asphalt comes and the pervasive urban sprawl follows. "Roads shorted the time between two point, while shortening the lives of our plant and animal world, thus creating a negative impact on the beautiful cultures of our indigenous Native American Indians whose land they cross." - Corwin Clairmont, statement from Brodsky Center / Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper website |
