Statement about this object |
This photograph documents "Wolftown," second-hand store in Missoula owned and operated by Marcus Wolf. A self-described "pack rat," Wolf's obsessive collecting and organizing instincts resulted in a labyrinthine compound of buildings brimming with thousands of items. With creativity, humor, and an enormous amount of material at his disposal, Wolf produced unique sculptural objects and tableaux. He operated the business, which called a "non-profit museum," until his death on April 3, 2000. He welcomed all customers, whether they were workers in search of unique tools, artists and students hunting for vintage objects, or curious passers-by. His tours of Wolftown inspired many, and after he passed away, documentation began surfacing, revealing the surprising influence he had on Missoula's cultural life. In July 2001, MAM presented Wolftown: By Appointment Only, an exhibition of Wolf's original objects and artwork inspired by his work. "Bear and Padlocks" fits within Lucy Capehart's ongoing series of interiors, in which she seeks out the personalities behind the possessions. |
