Statement about this object |
The left panel of this diptych shows the Continental Pit in Butte, Montana. The original name of the Continental Pit was the East Berkeley Pit, after its well-known neighbor, now one of the nation's largest Superfund sites. Mining operations were suspended at the Berkeley Pit in 1982 and the Continental Pit in 1983, but Montana Resources continued to mine copper from the Continental intermittently until its closure 2000. However, mining restarted in 2003 with the rise of copper prices. |
