Statement about this object |
This print is part of Communities:West III, a biennial print portfolio coordinated by Sukha Worob and Andrew Rice. Worob and Rice invited printmakers who participated in the first two portfolios to return and invite a colleague to participate. The enthusiastic response from 52 artists represents a diverse group of veteran and emerging printmakers, academics and working artists who share "unyielding ties" to the West. According to the artist, "The P.P.E. prototypes were designed to protest the current U.S. Presidential administration. I brought blank Tyvek protective suits to italy to develop during a month long study abroad program that I led at Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in July 2017. Every person holds the potential to inflict harm upon self and other. The suits offer physical, emotional and spiritual protection while increasing fortitude. The suits create a protective barrier from hatred and foster awareness (consapevolezza) in the wearer. Circulating compassion outward and inward, they generate strength and resilience while invoking the protective powers of the elemental forces of earth, water, fire and air. Courage, compassion and insight flow through the protective barrier, while deflecting bigotry and hatred. The wearer of the suit takes on a meditative, inward facing demeanor. The serene and silent participants create a formidable presence, awakening the consciousness and curiosity of an otherwise distracted public audience. The prints presents a reminder that we are resilient in the face of adversity." |
