Statement about this object |
According to the artist, the title of this print, Modern Times, refers to the Charlie Chaplin movie of the same name. The standing figure was inspired by a sight she saw at a law school, where Indian lawyers combined old and new traditions. The fruit label is from the 1930s, when commercial packing labels were lithographs and often appropriated American Indian imagery. At the bottom left is a botanical drawing of dogwood, referring to the medicinal uses of plants on the Flathead Reservation, where Smith was raised. The cat bottom right represents change and the impact of new cultures; small felines were brought to this continent by Europeans and are not found very often on today's reservations. |
