Statement about this object |
"We [Willem & Diane Volkersz] learned about Howard Finster through the 1976 Georgia folk art survey exhibition catalog, 'Missing Pieces.' As a result, I took a sabbatical from my teaching position at the Kansas City Art Institute and with Diane and baby Jason (then about 7 months old) embarked on a car camping trip in the South. It was on this first visit that we purchased Finster's 'What Is the Soul of Man' painting, now in the collection of the High Museum in Atlanta. When I visited Finster in the mid-1980's, I found this sign (which had been displayed on a wall as part of his Paradise Garden) had become dislodged and was sitting on the ground below the spot where it had been mounted. Anxious to get a piece that had actually been displayed in his famous garden, I asked if I could buy it and Finster agreed to sell it to me." - Willem Volkersz, December 2016 |
