Statement about this object |
Ray Doty, a patrolman with the Missoula City Police Department, was at the Peace March. He identified himself in the right background of this image, visible only by the protective white helmet he wore. According to Doty, demonstrations like this one were the only times that officers wore riot gear. Just to the right of Doty and wearing a cowboy hat is Sheriff Walker. The man holding a camera at the right edge of the frame is from the Daily Missoulian. At center of the image a bearded man clutching a protest sign is escorted by University officials or possibly Secret Service. Doty referred to this man as Charlie Brown. Brown had just delivered a speech, and a man whose brother was in Vietnam had thrown a punch. The altercation and response from authorities was unclear, but it happened right by where Doty was standing. He pointed out that the dark splash on the hem of the light-colored coat worn by the escort on the right is blood. - from a meeting with Ray Doty, April 12, 2005 |
