Notes |
DeWeese was a pioneering Modernist who influenced the development of contemporary art in Montana. While attending Ohio State University he met his future wife Gennie, a fellow painter. After he received his BFA, he served in the Air Force band in Hawaii during World War II. In 1948, he earned an MA in Iowa. In 1949, DeWeese accepted a faculty position in the art department at Montana State University, Bozeman. Known for creating art out of any material at hand, DeWeese was an excellent draftsman and portraitist. His studio on Main Street in Bozeman served as a creative center for theater, art making and Vietnam War protests. In 1965, the DeWeeses moved to a new home south of Bozeman on Cottonwood Creek, which quickly became a gathering place for intellectuals and artists. Robert M. Pirsig's visit with the DeWeeses is memorialized in the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." DeWeese was a prolific artist who produced over 500 known paintings and constructions, 1,600 drawings, hundreds of prints and thousands of small sketches.
